One Day to Recycle Hazardous Waste?

That's right! New Orleans is allowed 5 whole hours to recycle an entire years worth of collective waste. As much as I love this city it's no secret that we have a long way to before we clean up our recycling act. Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day happens only once a year! Free to NOLA residents, recycle your old lightbulbs, batteries, paint, electronics, household cleaners and more. See the full list here.

Saturday, May 12th at 8AM - 1PM   Location: 2829 Elysian Fields Ave

Thanks for the Love Y'all! #Om@NOMA

I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with two very talented energy healers, Dr. Jess Tregle and Dr. Rick Laudry. If you're wondering what Clear the Clutter has to do with meditation and hypnotherapy here's the scoop, I'm also an energy worker! As a professional organizer I physically change your environment, shift the energy in your home and improve quality of life. If you've ever removed hundreds of lbs from your space then you know what I'm talking about, that feeling of lightness and relief is amazing.

Downsizing the Movie

Would you consider the ultimate form of downsizing?  "When scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall as a solution to over-population, Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures."

I know what movie I'll be seeing this Christmas!

What is Death Cleaning?

Just in time for Halloween! There's a new trend on the rise called Swedish Death Cleaning. While it may sound morbid it's simply "the process of cleaning house before you die, rather then leaving it up to your loved ones to do after you're gone." Sometimes a new perspective can change the relationship we have with our stuff for the better. Check out this article in Time Magazine for more on Death Cleaning.

Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things

I'm a big fan of documentaries. They give me inspiration and in watching Minimalism I was reassured that my personal less-is-more journey is still the path for me. Even if you'd never consider the minimalistic lifestyle there are certainly aspects that I feel would benefit even the greatest of skeptics. Certainly there is no one-right-way to live a happy life. How you choose to live your life is up to you but if unburdening yourself of clutter could improve the quality of your life, isn't it at least worth a try?

Stasia Returns to Happy Hour! New Orleans Favorite Radio Show

When you walk into a bar in New Orleans and you pull up a bar stool you never know who's going to be sitting on the other side of you. What you do know is no matter what they look like, what they're wearing, whether they just got out of a limousine or just got out of jail they're gonna be happy to talk to you. Cause that's New Orleans and this is Happy Hour! A 60 min cocktail fueled conversation with random people that have nothing in common.  http://bit.ly/2fTus00

Although America voted for President Trump, New Orleans went 80% for Hillary. Happy Hour assembled "3 of the most upbeat New Orleanians" they could convince to come have free drinks with Grant Morris at Happy Hour. If you're fretting about future of the world, consume this Happy Hour with a drink and you'll feel a lot better about the world, the country and yourself.

Cheers!

Ready for the Holidays?

Tis the season to be thankful but when too much stuff takes over your kitchen you'll be thankful just to see the counter top! Early November is the perfect time for a kitchen cleanse. There are plenty of people out there that would be grateful for your food donations. Bag up what you can for your local food band (many grocery stores have drop off stations), toss what's expired then take inventory of your pantry.

Want some help? Call (504) 920-1800 to schedule your Clear the Clutter holiday session today. A 3 hour weekend appointments are still available.

Happy Downsizing!

When Your Nanny Kids Grow Up to Be Amazing Humans

I was a nanny for the Schiffler kids for over 10 years. Even though I didn't know it yet, working with these crazy busy kids was my professional organizer in training bootcamp! Now all young adults Elizabeth, Benjamin and Eleanor are my family and I can't help but feel so proud of them and their accomplishments. If anyone says today's kids are lazy I simply look at this family and can see how hard they work and not just for themselves.

Eleanor, now a freshman in college (am I dating myself here, because she's the youngest?) is going to Argentina with Habitat for Humanity to build a house for a family in need that's asking for help. While most of us feel we have "too much stuff" there are too many families who don't have enough. Her fb post shares the following "I did serious research into whether this trip could end up being detrimental or be more of a "voluntourism" trip, but I've learned that Habitat is really an awesome organization that has helped families all over the world, including the US, build houses on the families own terms."

If you would like to support Eleanor please click here to contribute or simply share this post. All donations will go towards the cost of materials needed to build the house. Her goal is $1,500. Good luck in Argentina Eleanor!

VIDEO: Clear the Clutter on WWL-TV, Hurricane Preparedness

I have a confession to make. I've been living in New Orleans for over 5 years now and have never been fully prepared for a hurricane season. Is that crazy? Motivated by the recent flood and ongoing devastation in Baton Rouge I've finally started to prepare for an emergency. A little online research led me to Nola.gov where you can find a full checklist of items to gather. This weekend I visited WWLTV Channel 4 News to talk about my experience. Watch it now for additional tips and local's suggestions for eating without electricity

1Have on hand at least 3 to 5 days worth of water. A gallon of water per person per day including pets.

2Stock 3 to 5 days worth of food. Canned meat and soups, beef jerky, trail mix, granola bars, peanut butter and instant coffee are staples.

3In case of evacuation it's good to have single serving portions so you don't have to worry about storing leftovers or having them going bad.

4. While many suggest bringing a hand operated can opener and agree it's a great suggestion I decided to only buy easy open (pop top) canned goods.

5Don't forget specialty items such as baby formula, pet food and being that this is New Orleans it's probably best to have at least one emergency bottle of wine. Buy a screw top bottle or if you forget the bottle opener at home a shoe will do the trick!

FestiGals 2016: Overwhelmed with too much stuff? As a clutter expert I believe that compassionate downsizing is the fastest way to eliminate the stress of mess for good! Here's how.

FestiGals Speakers Deliver a Positive Message

I was proud to be among the featured speakers this weekend at FestiGals 2016. FestiTalks, a fast paced presentation inspired by TED Talks was introduced to the line up this year and it did not disappoint. I couldn't help but notice a common theme among my fellow female entrepreneurs as each of us in our own way highlighted the importance of self worth.

Consider this your daily reminder to be kind to yourself. When we take care of ourselves we are more capable of being there for those that need us most.

Clutter Busting Inspiration at FestiGals 2016!

Overwhelmed with too much stuff? You're not alone! Clutter is known to contribute to anxiety, stress and depression. Not exactly the most positive way to begin and end your daily routine but how can you stop the madness? You may be surprised to hear New Orleans #1 professional organizer say forget about getting organized but that's exactly what I'm telling you to do.

Clear the Clutter Rachel's Clothing.jpg

As a guest speaker at this years FestiTalks I'll share in greater detail why it's time to shift your focus. Instead of trying to organize your clutter I encourage you to let your clutter go! There are many reasons why we may cling to things that no longer serve a purpose, emotional clutter being a major contributor. However you have the power to change your personal environment and to improve your quality of life simply by downsizing. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. Schedule a time to declutter and put it on your calendar.
  2. Start with a small & manageable task
  3. Make a decision on every item you touch.
  4. Donate, donate, donate! Call Bridge House to schedule a donation pick up.
  5. Celebrate your accomplishments big and small.

What are your clutter challenges or success stories? I look forward to hearing your experiences and seeing you at FestiGals.

Happy Downsizing!
